Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago is located in southernmost part of Myanmar (Burma). It is also an enormous area features more than 800 pristine islands dotted throughout the Andaman Sea of the coast between Myeik (Mergui) and Kawthaung (Victoria Point). First, you have to fly from Yangon to Kawthaung or Myeik and then proceed to the jetty and take a boat to the islands. Due to its virtual isolation, the islands and surrounding seas are alive with an amazing diversity of flora and fauna, very beautiful underwater scenes and marine life. On the islands themselves, various animals thrive including deer, monkeys, tropical birds including horn bills and wild swine.
Mergui Archipelago is famous as a destination for activities such as diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, fishing and nature research. The best diving conditions exist from November to April, with whale sharks and manta rays visiting from February to May. The only human inhabitants in the area are SEA GYPSIES, namely SALON in Myanmar(Burma). They live on boats during dry season and remain on land during rainy season. Salon Festival is held on 16th February, to promote the salon people way of life and Mergui Archipelago as a tourist Destination.
